HISTORY
Muş Alparslan University is one of the 17 universities established with the publication of the Law on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions No. 5662 and the Decree Law on the Staff of Higher Education Institutions in the Official Gazette on May 29, 2007.
The Muş Faculty of Education, within the university, was founded based on Article 30 of Law No. 2809 and was initially affiliated with Fırat University by the Council of Ministers’ decision dated August 6, 1998 (No. 98/1462). Additionally, in accordance with the decision of Fırat University’s Administrative Board on May 23, 1986 (1985-1986 6/90) and the Higher Education Council’s resolution on March 25, 1987, a vocational school was established under Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, amended by Law No. 2880.
As per the resolution of the 1st National Health Congress, aimed at improving the efficiency of healthcare services, the Muş School of Health was established under Van Yüzüncü Yıl University in accordance with the Council of Ministers' decision dated October 10, 1996 (No. 96/8655) and the Health Council's resolutions No. 174, 184, and 185. This institution began offering undergraduate education in the 1997-1998 academic year and produced its first graduates in the 2000-2001 academic year.
During its affiliation with Fırat University and Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, the university initially operated with four academic units:

Additionally, the School of Health Sciences was transformed into a faculty on October 4, 2019. The final preparations for the establishment of two more faculties were completed, and an application was submitted to the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
In the 2021-2022 academic year, the university planned to enroll nearly 4,000 students across 48 associate degree, 38 undergraduate, 24 master's, and 6 doctoral programs.

Furthermore, under the YÖK Anadolu Project, Muş Alparslan University was among 15 selected universities. The institution has also reached the final stage of becoming a National Research and Application Center for Roughage in Turkey.
The founding rector of the university was Prof. Dr. Nihat İnanç (2008-2015). Since March 15, 2015, Prof. Dr. Fethi Ahmet Polat has been serving as the university’s rector. Rector Polat is also the Secretary-General of the International Universities Council, of which Muş Alparslan University is a member.
